Anesthesiologist salary

According to American Society of Anesthesiologists, “As physicians, anesthesiologists are responsible for administering anesthesia to relieve pain and for managing vital life functions during surgery. After surgery, they maintain the patient in a comfortable state during the recovery, and are involved in the provision of critical care medicine in the intensive care unit. Anesthesiologists’ responsibilities to patients include: Preanesthetic evaluation and treatment; Medical management of patients and their anesthetic procedures; Postanesthetic evaluation and treatment; On-site medical direction of any non-physician who assists in the technical aspects of anesthesia care to the patient”.

Anesthesiologists, like any other physicians, complete undergraduate education with four years of medical school leading to the award of MD/DO degree.Thereafter they specialize in anesthesiology by successfully completing a four-year anesthesiology residency program.  Following completion of a residency program, anesthesiologist residents can sit for the American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA) exam.

Fellowship programs available to Anesthesiologist are:

  1. Critical care medicine  ( 1 year training)
  2. Pain Medicine ( 1 year training)
  3. Hospice and Palliative medicine
  4. Cardiac Anesthesia ( 1-2 year training)
  5. Neuroanesthesia ( 1-2 year training)
  6. Obstetric Anesthesia ( 1-2 year training)
  7. Public Policy 
  8. Regional Anesthesia/Ambulatory/Orthopedic ( 1 year training)
  9. Pediatric Anesthesia ( 1 year training)
  10. Trauma Anesthesiology

 One to two years of additional training is required to practice in one of the subspecialty areas. Research fellowship in anesthesia may require 2-3 years.

Stipends for anesthesiology residents/fellows, link any other post MD/DO training are determined by the Office of Graduate Medical Education and are as follows for the 2011-2012 academic year:

After training the salary is good. The mean annual salary of board certified anesthesiologist is $234,950 and the mean hourly pay is $112.96. However, it is to be noted that the median annual  salary for a  Physician – Anesthesiologist in the United States is  $335,910. The salary, like all procedural specialty, at entry-level is less but with more than 3 years of experience it could reach or even surpass the median.
