Physician Assistant Salary

According to American Academy of Physician Assistants, a Physician assistant, also known as PA, ” is a medical professional who works as part of a team with a doctor. A PA is a graduate of an accredited PA educational program who is nationally certified and state-licensed to practice medicine with the supervision of a physician.” Supervision, however, does not imply that a supervising physician must always be present with the physician assistants or direct every aspect of physician assistant-provided care.In rural areas, the PA may be the only healthcare provider on-site, collaborating with a physician elsewhere through telecommunication.Physician assign duties to the physician assistant wherein they exercise autonomy.
Physician Assistant are trained to deliver medical and surgical services that includes:
  • Conducting physical exams 
  • Obtaining medical histories
  • Diagnosing and treating illnesses 
  • Ordering and interpreting tests 
  • Counseling on preventive health care 
  • Assisting in surgery 
  • Prescribing medications
Most physician assistants programs at least 2 years of basic science courses, including;
 chemistry, physiology, anatomy, microbiology and biology. There are currently 159 accredited physician assistant programs in the United States. They award a master’s degree. The average length of a physician assistant education program is 27 months. All states require physician assistants be licensed. 
The mean annual salary of a physician assistant is $86,410 per year or $41.54 per hour.Approximately 64 percent of physician assistant report being “most satisfied” or “somewhat satisfied” with their jobs.

Physician assistant-provided services are covered by all government-funded public payers, such as Medicare, Medicaid and TRICARE, and nearly all private payers(health insurance companies). Medicare pays for medical and surgical services provided by PAs at 85 percent of the physician fee.Certain services are paid at 100%.
